The Bishop’s Palace
When thinking of Eger Castle, everyone remembers the siege of 1552, István Dobó, and Jumurdzsák. However, Eger is much more than this: for centuries, it has been one of the most important bishoprics in Hungary.
In a hierarchical organization, there is usually only one way up, but Ippolito d’Este’s career is an exception. Thanks to Queen Beatrice, his aunt, the seven-year-old Ippolito was made archbishop of Esztergom by King Matthias. In 1497, he exchanged the archbishopric for the bishopric of Eger, where he emerged as a true Renaissance lord, bringing never-before-seen luxury. In our work, visitors can peek into the palace’s rooms or watch the hunters’ parade.
