An animated adaptation of one of the most brutal and perhaps best-known events in Hungary’s Counter-Reformation, presented with a visual style appropriate to the grim subject.
This film depicts the fate of the 40 pastors sentenced to galley slavery, a tragedy forever etched into Hungarian Protestant memory. Using first-person narrative verse, the black-and-white film draws heavily from period engravings to evoke the suffering of those tortured and enslaved. The closing scene, in color, transcends personal fates to become a testament to divine providence.
