A Western Gentleman in the East
In 1877, Béla Széchenyi led one of the greatest Hungarian scientific expeditions of all time to Asia to explore China's interior territory and search for the ancestors of the Hungarians.
This film showcases Béla Széchenyi’s adventurous three-year journey, during which he and his companions traveled through China and Japan. Although he did not stumble upon traces of the ancient Hungarians, he returned with a great deal of scientific information and, furthermore, the expedition mapped many areas of China previously unknown in the West. The film’s visual style was inspired by East Asian paintings and ink drawings.
