A taste of our work

A guide to estimating the production time of a 3D animated film

Creating 3D animations is one of the most complex processes we work with. Our clients – understandably – arrive with a wide range of expectations, often accompanied by tight deadlines, all of which need to be reconciled with the available budget through close collaboration. This requires a solid script, which allows us to prepare a detailed cost estimate and align the concept with the available resources. It is important to note that creating character models, movements, and environments requires preliminary graphic studies in order to achieve the most accurate final result. This preparatory phase accounts for about 20% of the total production time, which is why it is especially important to start the project with a thoroughly considered concept. Once this phase is completed, we can allocate the necessary work hours to each scene and production phase, allowing us to precisely define the final budget based on applicable hourly rates.

Factors determining the cost of 3D animation:

  • duration of the animation
  • number and level of detail of graphic elements
  • quantity and complexity of animated movements
  • special or non-standard requirements (e.g., 270-degree projection, custom dimensions or shapes)
  • human work hours required for narration/voice-over
  • music licensing fees or cost of original music

A guide to estimating the production time of a 3D animated film

Average time required for a 5-minute animated film:

Pre-production

  • synopsis creation by the curator with assistance: 1 week
  • scriptwriting, in consultation with the curator: 1–2 weeks
  • storyboard creation, in consultation with the curator: 1–2 weeks
  • animatic creation: 1–2 days

Parallel processes:

  • preliminary costume and landscape studies, in consultation with the curator: 3–6 weeks
  • collecting necessary source materials (archival materials, visual and written references): the amount of time required may slightly vary, but we can provide highly satisfactory results on almost any topic within 4 weeks, even without curatorial support.
Total pre-production time: approx. 3–6 weeks

Production

  • model creation, in consultation with the curator: 4–8 weeks
  • scene setup, in consultation with the curator: 3–6 weeks
  • animation of movements, in consultation with the curator: 3–6 weeks
  • adding effects to the scenes: 2–4 weeks
  • post-production: 1–2 weeks
  • sound design and language versions: 1 week

Parallel processes:

  • narration production: 2 weeks
Total production time: approx. 11–21 weeks
